SCORM Lessons 101

Use SCORM to seamlessly import lesson content you’ve created through third-party authoring tools and use it on to your Skilljar training site. In this article, we’ll explain some basic SCORM information, as well as the benefits and resources available to you. 

Which versions of SCORM does Skilljar support? 

Skilljar supports the below versions of SCORM:

  • SCORM 1.2 
  • SCORM 2004 - 3rd and 4th editions, without sequencing rules. 

What is SCORM? 

Shareable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) is a customizable content package that is created and managed through a third-party content provider tool and uploaded to Skilljar to be used as lesson content. 

The SCORM file itself is a web package made up of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. It’s useful if you want to create interactive lessons with a large library of learning objects, such as quizzes and videos to be used across multiple learning management systems (LMS), such as Skilljar. It provides more flexibility with the learning experience and more options to present your training content. 

More specifically, SCORM itself is the set of technical standards developed to make sure that your learning content communicates and can be used with your Skilljar training site.

How do I use SCORM?

Many Skilljar admins create lesson content using third-party content providers and want to reuse it within their Skilljar training site. Some of these content providers include: 

  • Camtasia
  • Articulate
  • Adobe Captivate
  • Knowbly

Skilljar supports the use of SCORM 1.2 and 2004 packages. Once you’ve created your SCORM content within your provider, you’ll export it as a zip file and then upload it to your courses as a lesson on your Skilljar dashboard (see How to Upload SCORM Content in a Course).

SCORM Lesson Analytics 

Most SCORM content providers include settings that allow you to track lesson analytics. If you have these settings configured within your package, your Skilljar dashboard can capture SCORM lesson data and scores. The SCORM analytics report provides an overview of the SCORM package performance across your courses, such as the average score and success count. Note: The analytics collected depends on the settings you’ve chosen via your SCORM content provider during the creation of your SCORM lesson package.

Common SCORM issues you may encounter

When you integrate a SCORM file with your Skilljar dashboard, you may encounter such issues as: 

  • Upload failures.
  • Visibility problems - including content not showing in the lesson.
  • Lessons are not being marked as complete.

Most of these issues can be resolved by rechecking the settings and troubleshooting within your SCORM content provider. 

An easy way to check for any bugs or issues is by uploading your SCORM lesson to SCORM Cloud using their free testing tool. SCORM Cloud is an online application that can host your lesson and analyze it for any issues that may stop it from working with your Skilljar dashboard. 

If you are having trouble with your SCORM file while integrating it with your dashboard and the same errors appear in SCORM Cloud, then the problem likely lies within your package.
