Ordered learning paths create a defined order of courses for students to follow when students move through a path.
When enforced, students will move through the learning path sequentially, with each course “unlocked” after completing the previous course in the path.
It’s important to note that pre-existing course prerequisites are respected by ordered learning paths based on how students are accessing the course:
- When accessing a course ‘a la carte’, only the prerequisites directly on the course are enforced.
- When accessing the course via an ordered learning path, the prerequisites defined directly on the course as well as the earlier courses in the path must be completed.
- When accessing the course via a path that does not require students to take courses in order (a non ordered learning path), only the prerequisites directly on the course are enforced.
- Course progress/completion syncs across all paths and the a la carte course.
Note: When a student enrolls in a learning path, Skilljar will automatically recognize any existing course enrollments for courses within the path. If the student has already enrolled in a course prior to their path enrollment, their existing progress will be maintained within the path.
Admin experience
This functionality is in the Domains & Publishing section of your Skilljar dashboard.
- Expand the Domains and Publishing header on the left and select Domains to open a snapshot of your domains.
- Find the domain you want to manage and select Published Paths
- Select the title of the path you want to edit to access its settings.
- Scroll down to the Content & Order section, and check the box to Require students to take courses in order. Here, you can define the order in which you would like your students to take courses.
Student experience
When students access a course from an ordered learning path, a message will display informing the student that they must register for the learning path to register for the course.
When students register and view the ordered learning path, they will see the courses they need to take displayed in sequential order. A ‘lock’ icon indicates to the student that the course cannot be accessed until the earlier courses are completed.
When students complete the last lesson of a course in an ordered learning path, but not the last course of the path, they can navigate to the next course in the path by selecting ‘Next Course’.
